Rose Marie Lopez
- It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jackson family member Rose Marie Lopez, who passed away on September 26 from complications of COVID-19. Rose was a beloved clinical staff nurse on the adult behavioral care unit at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital for more than a year. She also worked at University of Miami Hospital for many years prior to her time at Jackson. Rose will be greatly missed by her team members and by the health system.
Maria Penalba
- We are mourning the death of longtime Jackson family member Maria Penalba, who passed away August 15 from complications of COVID-19. Maria dedicated 17 years of her career to Jackson, most recently as an enrollment specialist at Rosie Lee Wesley Health Center. She was a valued colleague to our health system, and will be greatly missed.
Herve Franck
- It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Herve Franck, who died August 15 from complications of COVID-19. Herve was a devoted outpatient peer specialist at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital for two years. We grieve the loss of our colleague, who is survived by his six children and close family members.
Ezechiel Dorcil
- It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jackson family member Ezechiel Dorcil, who passed away on August 12 from complications of COVID-19. Ezechiel was a dedicated mental health hospital specialist at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital who had been with Jackson for 15 years. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by the health system
Nichelle Jones
- Our Jackson family is mourning the death of longtime pharmacy technician Nichelle Jones, who passed away on Saturday, August 7, from complications of COVID-19. Nichelle dedicated 17 years of her career to Jackson. She will be greatly missed by her colleagues and by the health system.
Rodrigo Moreno
- We are mourning the death of Jackson family member Rodrigo Moreno, who passed away on May 23 from complications of COVID-19. Rodrigo was a dedicated respiratory therapist at Jackson Memorial Hospital for almost a year. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by the health system.
Brenda Oliver
- It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jackson family member Brenda Oliver, who passed away on May 22 from complications of COVID-19. Brenda was a beloved billing financial analyst in our Corporate Business Office for about four years. She will be greatly missed by her team members and by the health system.

Sergio Perez Rios
- We are mourning the death of Jackson family member Sergio Perez Rios, who passed away September 8 from complications of COVID-19. Sergio was a dedicated clinical staff nurse in Jackson South’s adult psychiatric unit for four years. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by the health system.
Dr. Luis Caldera-Nieves
- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Luis Caldera-Nieves, a longtime employee of the University of Miami Health System and physician at Jackson Health System, who died April 8 from complications of COVID-19. Our condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Dr. Caldera was a beloved member of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences for more than 25 years who practiced at the UHealth Kendall location. After serving in the Air Force, Dr. Caldera joined UM, ultimately spearheading the department’s service in south Miami-Dade and becoming an experienced obstetrician who provided the full spectrum of care in women’s health. Our UHealth and Jackson Health systems grieve the loss of our esteemed and beloved colleague, who is survived by his wife and six adult children. These are extremely challenging times and both UHealth and Jackson remain grateful to all frontline healthcare workers during this pandemic.
Devin Francis
- We are mourning the death of Jackson family member Devin Francis, who passed away April 8 from complications of COVID-19. Devin was a dedicated radiology technologist in Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department for more than a year. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by the health system.
Araceli Buendia Llagan
- Our Jackson family is mourning the death of longtime Jackson nurse Araceli Buendia Llagan, who died on March 27 from complications of COVID-19. Araceli dedicated nearly 33 years of her life treating some of our most critically ill patients in the surgical intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During her long and storied career, she also mentored and trained other nurses, and was a champion for the profession. Araceli will be missed, but her legacy will live on in the noble work that her colleagues do every day.
