, who passed away on September 26 from complications of COVID-19. Rose was a beloved clinical staff nurse on the adult behavioral care unit at Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital for more than a year. She also worked at University of Miami Hospital for many years prior to her time at Jackson. Rose will be greatly missed by her team members and by the health system.

Dr. Luis Caldera-Nieves
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of
Dr. Luis Caldera-Nieves
, a longtime employee of the University of Miami Health System and physician at Jackson Health System, who died April 8 from complications of COVID-19. Our condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Dr. Caldera was a beloved member of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences for more than 25 years who practiced at the UHealth Kendall location. After serving in the Air Force, Dr. Caldera joined UM, ultimately spearheading the department’s service in south Miami-Dade and becoming an experienced obstetrician who provided the full spectrum of care in women’s health. Our UHealth and Jackson Health systems grieve the loss of our esteemed and beloved colleague, who is survived by his wife and six adult children. These are extremely challenging times and both UHealth and Jackson remain grateful to all frontline healthcare workers during this pandemic.

Araceli Buendia Llagan
, who died on March 27 from complications of COVID-19. Araceli dedicated nearly 33 years of her life treating some of our most critically ill patients in the surgical intensive care unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital. During her long and storied career, she also mentored and trained other nurses, and was a champion for the profession. Araceli will be missed, but her legacy will live on in the noble work that her colleagues do every day.
